BMW M4 Competition vs BMW M3 Competition — what to choose for a weekend in Prague?

We compare BMW M4 Competition and BMW M3 Competition: performance, equipment, driving feel and ideal rental scenarios.

· VertexRent ·4 min read

The BMW M4 Competition and BMW M3 Competition share the S58 engine (510 hp, 650 Nm), the eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox and the brutal M-division chassis tuning. Yet they are two different characters: a practical sedan versus an experience-first coupé, rear-wheel drive versus M xDrive all-wheel drive. We rent both cars out regularly — here is an honest comparison to make your choice easier.

Quick answer

The BMW M3 Competition (sedan, rear-wheel drive, from 3,590 CZK/day) is the pick for everyday usability, business trips and the purist rear-drive experience. The BMW M4 Competition (coupé, M xDrive, from 5,990 CZK/day) is the pick for visual impact, quicker acceleration and all-weather traction. Power is identical — 510 hp.

The same heart: the S58 engine

Both cars are powered by the 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six S58 — 510 hp, 650 Nm and a soundtrack that leaves no doubts even in its default setting. The eight-speed M Steptronic shifts instantly, and Sport Plus mode adds a noticeable punch between gears. The difference isn't under the bonnet — it's in how each car sits on the road.

Who should choose the M3 Competition

The M3 sedan is the more sensible choice of the pair — and no slower for it:

Book the BMW M3 Competition

  • Practicality — four doors, five seats and a proper boot. A weekend for two with luggage or golf bags is no problem.
  • Business use — the more grown-up silhouette works at meetings and weddings alike; a client gets in the back without acrobatics.
  • The purist experience — our M3 is purely rear-wheel drive. On dry tarmac it's the most engaging M-division configuration: steered with the throttle and demanding respect.
  • Price — from 3,590 CZK/day for short rentals and from 2,790 CZK/day for a month or longer, it's the most affordable entry into the M division in our fleet.

Who should choose the M4 Competition

The M4 coupé is visually more aggressive and technically more confident:

Book the BMW M4 Competition

  • M xDrive — our 2024 M4 Competition has all-wheel drive, putting 510 hp down even in rain or winter. 0–100 km/h takes 3.5 s — four tenths quicker than the rear-drive car.
  • Impact — the low silhouette and frameless windows make the M4 the star of any photoshoot, meet-up or hotel arrival.
  • Weekend character — two doors and smaller rear seats matter less when there are two of you and the goal is the experience.
  • We also have an M4 Cabrio (2025) in the fleet — the same drivetrain with an open roof for the summer months.

What it really costs in 2026

Rates drop with rental length — the full price list is on the prices page:

Every rental includes 110 km per day; an upgraded 200 km/day tariff is available (M3 at 5,990 CZK/day, M4 at 9,490 CZK/day) — worth it for a road trip. Over-limit kilometres cost 29 CZK for the M3 and 40 CZK for the M4. The refundable deposit is 20,000 CZK for both cars, minimum driver age is 25 with a licence held at least 2 years.

Our tip: where to drive

For corporate events or a wedding we recommend the M3 — more prestige, easier entry. For a personal weekend with a partner or friend, take the M4 and head for the Karlštejn → Beroun → Prague loop — an ideal ~120 km full of corners that fits exactly into the daily limit. Want to pick the car up straight after landing? We'll arrange delivery to Václav Havel Airport.

Frequently asked questions

Is the M4 faster than the M3?

On paper, yes — thanks to M xDrive our M4 Competition does 0–100 km/h in 3.5 s versus 3.9 s for the rear-drive M3. Peak power of 510 hp is identical.

Which car is better in winter?

The M4 Competition — the M xDrive all-wheel drive handles snow and wet roads. We recommend the rear-drive M3 in winter only to experienced drivers.

What is the deposit and what's included?

Both cars carry a refundable 20,000 CZK deposit. The price includes 110 km/day, liability and comprehensive insurance with a deductible. Details are in the rental conditions.

Can I try both cars?

Yes — a popular scenario is one weekend with the M3 and another with the M4. For repeat rentals we're happy to offer individual terms.
